With the crocheted African flower you definitely can make outstanding works of art.

I looked for the original pattern, and I found out from here that it stands into an Afrikaans South African magazine, called Sarie. Link to the original pattern in Afrikaans here.

So, inspired by this motif, I made african flowers in two colors.

Materials:

  • Yarn: Merango Basic uni (bordeaux and fuchsia) - 100% polyacryl (50 gr ~ 133m)

  • Crochet hook: 3,5 mm

  • Scissors and tapestry needle

Stitches and abbreviations (U.S. terms):

  • st(s) – stitch(es)

  • ch – chain stitch

  • sc - single crochet

  • Lsc - long single crochet (spike stitch)

  • dc – double crochet

  • slst - slip stitch

  • ch-sp - chain space

  • yo - yarn over

START:

Start with a magic ring.

Row 1: With color A (bordeaux), ch3 (counted as 1dc), 1dc, ch1; *2dc, ch1*; repeat ** 4 more times; slst in the 3rd ch of first ch3; fasten off.

You should have 6 groups of 2dc, separated by 1ch.

Row 2: Join color B (fuchsia), slst in the first ch1-sp; *2dc, ch1, 2dc* in each ch1-sp across; spst in the 3rd ch of first ch3.

You should have 6 groups of *2dc, ch1, 2dc*.

Row 3: Ch3, dc6 in the same ch1-sp; dc7 in the next ch1-sp and in each ch1-sp all around; slst in the 3rd ch of first ch3; fasten off.

You should have 6 groups of 7dc in each ch1-sp.

Row 4: Join color A; work sc's in every dc all around, making Lsc between the groups of 7dc; fasten off.

Note: For Lsc - insert your hook into the space between the *2dc, ch1, 2dc* groups from Row 2; pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on your hook.

You should have groups of 7sc, separated by 1Lsc.

That's it! You just made an African flower!

I hope you enjoyed today's project.

In the next post, I'll show you how I transformed a bunch of African flowers into a reversible pillow cover.
